Trauma Services

Always Ready

You may not be ready when the need for a trauma care arises, but we are.

Forrest General Hospital's Level II Trauma Center provides an immediate, organized response by a highly specialized team, 24/7, 365 days a year. Our Trauma Center is always staffed by board-certified trauma surgeons waiting for a need to arise. The Trauma Center is also staffed by in-house Emergency Physicians, Anesthesiologists, and Critical Care Physicians who are available 24-hours a day. Forrest General Hospital's Trauma Center provides 24-hour coverage for Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery, Otolaryngology, Urology, and Interventional Radiology services. Our Level II Trauma Center receives over 2,000 trauma visits per year. We have developed an immediate, organized response to trauma patients in order to meet their needs at a moment's notice, greatly improving their chance for survival.

Forrest General's Trauma Services Department is continuously working to improve the quality of care our patients receive. One such way is through participation in the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP). This national benchmarking program gives us an idea where our program stands in comparison to more than 850 high level trauma centers across the United States in TQIP's database.

You may not be ready or prepared when the need for trauma care arises, but we are. As the hub for medical excellence in South Mississippi, Forrest General Hospital will continue to provide the best possible care for our patients and the communities we have served for decades.

Level II Trauma Center specialist services:

All Forrest Health hospitals provide emergency services. However, trauma cases that need a higher level of care are transferred to Forrest General Hospital. Patients are transferred by ambulance or air ambulance, depending on their condition. If a patient needs to be admitted to the hospital following emergency care, they will be admitted to Forrest General Hospital.

In the event that more specialized care is needed, patients may be transferred from Forrest General to centers with specialty treatment units such as pediatric intensive care and burn care.

Reaching Those in Need, Where they Are

Before our trauma system could be what it is today, we were faced with a challenge: How do we reach people in rural areas, without marked streets or house numbers, quickly and efficiently? The late Dr. Richard Clark tells the story of our trauma program from the beginning in 1971.

Post-Trauma Care

To ensure patients receive a continuum of care, we have a specialized trauma follow-up clinic. Where this way patients see providers who are familiar with their situation and care oversee the recovery process from beginning to end. The trauma follow-up clinic allows a place for our highly-trained specialists to provide post-discharge care to patients affected by trauma, orthpaedic trauma, and neurosurgical trauma.
