    Highway 49 Construction Updates - Phase 1

On April 5, the City of Hattiesburg will begin a multi-phased traffic improvement project for the section of Hwy 49 between Hardy Street and Mimosa Lane. The project is anticipated to last 18-24 months. The goal of this project is to enhance vehicular access to and from Highway 49, and pedestrian access from the East side of Highway 49 into the Midtown Hattiesburg area. The completed project will include two newly constructed intersections on Hwy 49 at Camp Street and Adeline Street to allow for better and more efficient access to Midtown Hattiesburg. The current Mamie Street intersection will be removed.

In an effort to minimize the impact to vehicular traffic during construction, the project has been separated into seven phases. Phase 1 will be focused on the Camp Street/Mamie Street Intersection on the West side of Highway 49. This includes improvements to 27th Avenue (north of Camp Street), West Frontage Road (between Camp Street and Mamie Street), and Camp Street (between Mamie Street and West Frontage Road). This phase also includes construction within the staff parking lot on the East side of Mamie Street.

During Phase 1, all sections of roadway mentioned will be barricaded with no vehicular access permitted. The staff parking East of Mamie Street will generally remain open and accessible during construction via a new entrance from Mamie Street.

During the construction of Phase 1 (estimated to take 4-6 months), access to the Emergency Department will be impacted. Electronic message boards, traditional signage, and striping will be placed at numerous locations to direct the traveling public to the Emergency Department. Vehicular access will be rerouted as follows:

Highway 49 Access – Access to the E.D. from Highway 49 (Northbound and Southbound) will continue to utilize Mamie Street as currently exists.

28th Avenue Access – Access to the E.D. from 28th Avenue will utilize a temporary roadway across the staff parking lot between 28th Avenue and Mamie Street. This access from 28th Avenue is approximately 300 feet south of the 28th Avenue/Mamie Street/Arlington Loop intersection. Signage and striping will be added to direct public traffic to the existing Mamie Street roadway south of the construction limits for Phase 1 to access the E.D.

Included with this correspondence is a drawing of the Phase 1 construction and temporary access from 28th Avenue. Forrest General staff should be aware that public vehicles traveling to the E.D. will be utilizing the temporary access drive as the primary route to the E.D. As such, it is important that this route remain open and unobstructed at all times.
