Forrest General Hospital’s Hospice and Palliative Care Provides Care for Patients and Their Families
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – (November 1, 2021) November is Hospice and Palliative Care Month and what better time to bring awareness to the many services offered to Pine Belt residents by Forrest General Hospital and its compassionate healthcare professionals. This year’s theme is Family Caring for Family. A key part of hospice services is the Asbury Hospice House which opened its doors at the end of 2016. Since then, more than 2,100 families have been comforted while their loved ones have received the best possible care.
Nestled among pine trees on South 40th Avenue near the Hattiesburg Post Office, Asbury provides around-the-clock hospice care for up to 12 patients needing end-of-life care. Asbury’s staff can provide for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of each patient and their family. From the moment they enter through the welcoming doors, families will find spacious patient rooms, dining area and kitchen facilities, a comfortable family room, a meditation room, and garden all coupled with the best available care. The Asbury Hospice House is designed to provide for every aspect of care a family may need when facing the terminal illness of their loved one.
“Although a patient has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, we do our best to help our patients and their family members enjoy every minute of life while they are staying with us at Asbury Hospice House,” said Rebecca Pardue, director, Asbury Hospice House. “Our patients become like members of our family, and like family, we’ve had birthday parties, weddings, and many other wonderful celebrations of life here.”
Forrest General has been providing comprehensive in-home hospice care for end-of-life patients for years.
“Hospice allows us to walk daily with patients and families during the most difficult circumstances some have ever faced, and it is a journey I will continue with families for months and beyond,” said Ken Roberts, Chaplain and Bereavement coordinator for Forrest General Hospice and the Asbury Hospice House. “We want families to know this is not a path they have to walk alone.”
Hospice and palliative care programs provide pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support and spiritual care to patients and their families when a cure is not possible. These programs combine the highest level of quality medical care with the emotional and spiritual support that families need most when facing a serious illness or the end of life.
