Forrest General Hospital Names DAISY Award Winner For September

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – (October 6, 2021) Ericka Hardy, RN, a nurse on the 4T patient care unit, was named the recipient of the September DAISY Award at Forrest General Hospital. The award is presented monthly to a deserving nurse or nurses who exemplify clinical expertise and compassionate care and is recognized as a role model in the nursing community.

Hardy’s nominator spoke about how Hardy, a recent Jones College graduate, is always ready to jump in and help and never lets an overwhelming situation get the best of her. “Ericka makes her patients feel at ease, and they trust her. She is a wonderful nurse, and we can’t wait to see how she grows. Her patients describe her as kind, comforting, professional, positive and encouraging. She has a caring heart for her patients. Forrest General is fortunate to have Ericka.”

Hardy, who drives 90 minutes one way from Monticello to get to work, enjoys helping people change their lives. “I love being there when they need someone,” she said. She encourages other young people to consider a job in the nursing field, especially if they are a people person with a caring heart.

“Meeting new people every day and seeing how I change their lives is what I enjoy most about my job, especially if they are here for a while,” Hardy said. “I like to see the impact I make from the time they get here until the time they leave.”

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 in California by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of an auto-immune disease. During his eight-week hospital stay, his family was impressed by the care and compassion his nurses provided, not only to him but to everyone in the family. They created the DAISY Award in his memory to recognize those nurses who make a big difference in the lives of so many people.

Forrest General Hospital is proud to be a DAISY Award partner and recognizes one of its nurses with this special honor every month. Nurses are nominated by patients and family members, as well as other healthcare professionals. The winner is then selected by a board of healthcare workers. Each DAISY Award Honoree is recognized at a public ceremony in her/his unit and receives a certificate, a DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled, “A Healer’s Touch,” handcrafted by a tribe in Zimbabwe.
