Forrest General Hospital Names DAISY Award Winner For August

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – (August 25, 2021) Rachel Knight, RN, a nurse on the 9T patient care unit, was named the recipient of the August DAISY Award at Forrest General Hospital. The award is presented monthly to a deserving nurse or nurses who exemplify clinical expertise and compassionate care and is recognized as a role model in the nursing community.

Knight wanted to be a nurse since she was a little girl. “I was the little kid who walked around with Band-Aids and tried to fix everybody,” she said. “I’ve always had that compassion to help anybody and everybody.” Knight earned her degree at The University of Southern Mississippi School of Nursing.

Her nominator spoke about the nursing Knight has provided while caring for a COVID-19 patient. “I saw firsthand the dedication, passion, and emotion Rachel put towards taking the best care of this patient,” the nominator said. “She was not afraid to let her voice be heard. She provided constant updates to the patient’s spouse and mother, providing them with updates at least four times per shift. I saw Rachel fight for this patient and advocate for the patient’s needs while also caring for six other patients.”

Knight, who is from Wiggins, has been working with COVID-19 patients since June 2019, which she describes as a “wild ride.” “I feel like I’ve bonded really well with my patients and my coworkers,” she said. “We had to become a family very quickly. I feel like I’ve learned a lot, and as a new nurse, I feel grounded.”

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 in California by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of an auto-immune disease. During his eight-week hospital stay, his family was impressed by the care and compassion his nurses provided, not only to him but to everyone in the family. They created the DAISY Award in his memory to recognize those nurses who make a big difference in the lives of so many people.

Forrest General Hospital is proud to be a DAISY Award partner and recognizes one of its nurses with this special honor every month. Nurses are nominated by patients and family members, as well as other healthcare professionals. The winner is then selected by a board of healthcare workers. Each DAISY Award Honoree is recognized at a public ceremony in her/his unit and receives a certificate, a DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled, “A Healer’s Touch,” handcrafted by a tribe in Zimbabwe.
