Forrest General Names Two DAISY Award Winners For September

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – (September 30, 2020) Forrest General recognized two nurses as DAISY award winners for September – Colin O’Brien, a nurse in the ICU, and Sadie Sullivan, 4T-Telemetry. The award is presented monthly to a deserving nurse or nurses who exemplify clinical expertise and compassionate care and is recognized as a role model in the nursing community.

It was a yearning to help people that brought both winners to this noble profession.

For O’Brien, a career as a teacher was his original plan, but his love of science changed his mind. “It was the science behind it paired with the interactions and one-on-one as opposed to a group as a whole,” he said. As COVID-19 expanded, O’Brien, who worked in the Emergency Department at the time, stepped out of his comfort zone and volunteered to work full time in the ICU for two to three weeks to gain additional training in order to take care of critical care patients as the ICU expanded. He has worked at Forrest General for about a year and a half.

Sullivan, who is a registered nurse on 4T-Telemetry, was a late bloomer when it came to entering the nursing profession. “I was a little bit older coming into the nursing game,” she said. “I graduated several years ago in my 30s.” She thought what better way to quench her yearning desire to help people than through healthcare. A hospital employee for almost four years, Sullivan had just worked a 12-hour shift and was still at work tying up loose ends when she was surprised by administration and co-workers with the award. “I’m absolutely blown away and shocked,” she said.
