Forrest General Hospital Introduces da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System

Forrest General Hospital performed its first procedure using the new da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System. Sean Douglas, M.D., urologist at Forrest General Hospital, performed a robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy, a minimally invasive procedure used to treat prostate cancer by removing the prostate.

“This type of robotic technology enhances a physician’s abilities and what we’re able to do for our patients. We received extensive training with this surgical system, and in the future we hope to include other procedures using the da Vinci Xi,” said Douglas.

The da Vinci Xi System was designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used in minimally invasive surgery. The System can be used across a spectrum of surgical procedures in the areas of gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery.

The surgeon is 100 percent in control of the robotic-assisted da Vinci System, which translates his/her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements. The Xi System’s immersive 3D-HD vision system provides surgeons a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands during the surgery.

The da Vinci Xi System is an expandable technology platform that is designed to accommodate and seamlessly integrate a range of current technologies, as well as future innovations, in areas such as imaging, advanced instruments and anatomical access.
