Forrest General urges residents to look out for new Medicare cards
Forrest General Hospital wants Pine Belt residents to be aware that The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will issue new Medicare cards to all beneficiaries around the country between April 2018 and April 2019. CMS believes that the new cards will prevent identity theft and protect beneficiary privacy. Existing Medicare cards contain Social Security Numbers within the identification numbers; however, new Medicare numbers will be randomly-assigned identifiers that include both alpha and numeric characters.
“Medicare beneficiaries should continue using their existing cards until they have received a new card. The current card will be valid until April 2019, but the new card may also be used as soon as it is received by the beneficiary. It’s important to remember to not immediately throw away your old Medicare card. If you are unsure what to do or when to use your new card, do not discard your old card immediately, but bring both the old and new cards with you to your next doctor or hospital visit,” said Andy Johnson, director, Patient Financial Services.
Now is the time for Medicare beneficiaries to verify the address that is on file with CMS to ensure new cards are delivered to the correct address. If Medicare has the wrong address on file, the beneficiary will not receive their new card.
Beneficiaries can check their addresses by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or by logging in to their online account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount.
