Forrest General hosts 12th annual Cancer Survivors' Picnic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – (October 7, 2016) On Friday, October 7, cancer patients, survivors, family members and caregivers joined Forrest General’s Cancer Center from 11 a.m. – 12: 30 p.m. for good food, conversation, music and fun!

The Cancer Survivor’s Picnic, which is celebrating its 12th year, is designed to offer a chance to celebrate and fellowship with other survivors while relaxing and enjoying the beautiful weather. The cadets of the Mississippi National Guard Youth Challenge Academy worked hard setting up and cleaning up after the picnic. The Jones County Junior College Men’s Basketball Team also spent the day volunteering at the picnic and later helped with the Drive to Inspire campaign by filling gift bags.

“We wanted to help Forrest General make this a fun day for cancer survivors and patients currently fighting the disease; at JCJC, we are happy to help wherever we can. Everyone seemed to have fun at the picnic, and our team had a great time sharing the afternoon with them. We hope all of the activities in October serve as a reminder to everyone to take care of their bodies and get the cancer screenings recommended for their age ranges,” said Rahim Lockhart, head coach.

Forrest General’s Cancer Center urges everyone to make healthy choices like not smoking, staying at a healthy weight, eating right, keeping active and getting recommended screening tests. Screenings for breast, prostate, lung, colon or other types of cancer increases the chances of detecting certain cancers early, when they are most likely to be curable.

In 2016, Forrest General was awarded the Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Cancer Care. This evidence-based designation is the only cancer care award that identifies the country’s best healthcare institutions based on robust criteria that considers female patient satisfaction, clinical excellence, and what women say they want from a hospital.
