Forrest General Hospital launches new Palliative and Supportive Care Program

Hattiesburg, Miss — (August 18, 2015) Forrest General Hospital launched their new Palliative and Supportive Care Program, an expansion of their palliative care services, headed by Jacob Graham, M.D., August 3, 2015. Graham, a native of Jackson, MS, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and most recently completed his fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Palliative Care, pronounced “pál-ee-uh-tiv,” is a medical specialty focused on the relief of physical, emotional, social, and spiritual suffering associated with serious illness. Palliative care is provided by a team who supports patients and families, not only by helping control symptoms, but also by helping them understand their treatment options and goals. The goal of palliative and supportive care is to improve quality of life for both the patient and their families.

Forrest General has provided palliative care for many years in caring for terminally ill hospice patients. However, with the program, palliative and supportive care can begin at the moment of diagnosis and can help address symptoms and set goals for care, supporting patients and loved ones through challenging times.

According to Palliative and Supportive Care Coordinator, Amber Chancelor, RN, palliative care is increasingly recognized as an essential part of all healthcare systems. “I am very thankful to be a part of this program that is patient- and family-centered. Adding this new program at Forrest General is another way for us to show our patients how much we care about them and their families.”

Forrest General’s vision is to define the healthcare experience by providing world class care. Palliative care is appropriate at any age and any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment.

The Palliative and Supportive Care Program is located inside Forrest General Hospital on the first floor. For more information, please check us out at or contact the Palliative and Supportive Care Coordinator at 601-288-4307.
