Forrest General Hospice hosts Annual Memorial Service
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – (March 18, 2014) Forrest General Hospice held its annual memorial service on Saturday, March 15 at the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center to honor the memory of patients who died while on Hospice service this past year. All family members and friends of those patients were invited to attend. There was a balloon release and reception following the service.
“This is the time for the hospice staff and the patients’ families to come together to honor the memory of their loved ones,” said Rev. Ken Roberts, hospice chaplain/bereavement coordinator.
During times of terminal illness and loss, hospice care has been instrumental in providing care and improving the quality of life for terminally ill patients and their families. Hospice care emphasizes maintaining dignity, improving quality of life and providing compassionate care and comfort.
“It’s a wonderful program that brings hope and gives a patient something positive to look forward to in life,” said Hubert “Bo” Smith, a Forrest General Hospice patient.
“Our hospice staff and volunteers are the most dedicated, caring and patient focused caregivers. They work each day to alleviate the concerns and fears of our patients and families, relieve pain, lift spirits and brighten the days of others,” said Melita Miller, director of Home Care and Hospice.
In an effort to reach patients and their families with more complex needs, Forrest Health is building a new hospice home to provide the community with even more access to this priceless service. Forrest General’s Healthcare Foundation is committed to a $5 million dollar community capital fundraising campaign to give families an opportunity to be a part of a place that offers special comfort in South Mississippi.
Ground is expected to be broken on the new hospice house in 2014. It will take about a year to build and is scheduled to be completed in 2015. When completed, the new Hospice House of South Mississippi will provide a peaceful, home-like setting where hospice house staff can address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient and family.
