Forrest General Hospital Offers Trauma Survivor Circle For Survivors, Families

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – (July 11, 2025) In an effort to support survivors of traumatic physical injury and their families, Forrest General Hospital’s Trauma Services is starting a Trauma Survivors Circle. The first meeting is set for 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 30, in the cafeteria meeting rooms at the hospital.
The group, which will meet quarterly, will provide peer support and encouragement, resources and strength through support and assistance, enhancement of coping skills and self-care tips for caregivers and loved ones.
“This group will be a safe, supportive, and confidential space for adults navigating life after trauma,” said Quan Harris, FGH Injury Prevention coordinator. “Whether your experience is recent or from the past, you are welcome here.”
The first meeting will feature Dwight Owens, a motivational speaker, author, consultant, and disability advocate. Owens, who wanted to teach and coach football, had his life changed forever after he was involved in a horrible car accident in 2005 at the age of 23. A drunk driver crashed into Owens’ vehicle and left him with broken bones, punctured lungs, a broken back, severed spinal cord, and permanent paralysis. He spent a year in the hospital. Determined not to give in to a life of depression, self-pity and bitterness, Owens went the route that transformed his life into uplifting courage, self-reliance, and forgiveness. Owens, who has authored a book about his experience, “Still Standing,” will share his story during the meeting.
