Forrest General Hospital Hosts Obstetric Bootcamp for Nurses from Across the State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – (August 1, 2025) Forrest Health Labor and Delivery nurses, as well as other L&D nurses from across the state, gained valuable information during a Mississippi Perinatal Quality Collaborative Obstetric Boot Camp held July 28-29 at Forrest General Hospital. The two-day workshop was held in conjunction with the Mississippi Public Health Institute.

The 14-hours of training are designed to benefit all team members, from novice nurses to the most seasoned bedside nurses, but also included pertinent details for management implications and unit preparation.

“Knowledge improves confidence,” said Stephanie Swilley, MSNEd, RNC-OB/RNC-IAP/C-EFM/C-ONQS, who has 31-plus years of bedside labor and delivery nursing experience, plus 13 years of nursing education, and led the boot camp. “I hope L&D nurses can incorporate this training into their own skills at the bedside.”

The event included lectures and hands-on training for many parts of childbirth and newborn care. Topics covered included labor and delivery, fetal monitoring, seizures, early labor and premature birth, quick deliveries, amniotic fluid blockages, emergency care for mothers, postpartum hemorrhage, umbilical cord issues, and basic care after birth for both mother and baby. It also focused on communication and teamwork skills. Continuing Education credits were available for participants.

“We’re proud of the dedicated Labor & Delivery teams at Forrest General’s Family Birthplace and Highland Community Hospital’s Family Birth Center for the quality care they provide to mothers and babies,” said Tangela Jackson, director of Women and Children’s Services at FGH. “We also appreciate the efforts of our regional teams who help ensure expectant mothers are safely transferred to our larger facilities when needed. All of our staff are highly trained and committed to helping new families feel confident in caring for their newborns. We’re always looking for ways to grow our knowledge through continued training, so we can keep improving care across South Mississippi.”
