Forrest General Hospital Awarded Primary Stroke Center Certification from Joint Commission
Forrest General Hospital has earned Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Primary Stroke Center Certification.
Forrest General recently underwent a rigorous onsite review. During the visit, a Joint Commission reviewer evaluated compliance with related certification standards including program management, delivery and facilitation of clinical care, performance measurement and improvement, patient safety, staff education and competency, interdisciplinary collaboration, and support for patients and caregivers throughout the continuum of stroke care. The review also included onsite observations, medical record review, staff interviews, and evaluation of the hospital’s stroke performance data.
Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
“Primary Stroke Center Certification recognizes healthcare organizations committed to striving for excellence and fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Ken Grubbs, DNP, MBA, RN, executive vice president of Accreditation and Certification Operations and chief nursing executive, Joint Commission. “We commend Forrest General for using Joint Commission’s certification process to reduce variation in clinical processes and to strengthen its clinical program to drive safer, higher quality and more compassionate care for individuals served.”

Preparation for the certification involved a comprehensive, multidisciplinary review of Forrest General’s stroke program and its processes across the continuum of care including emergency recognition and rapid evaluation of stroke symptoms followed by a patient’s hospitalization, treatment, education, and discharge. FGH’s Stroke Program continuously monitors performance data and patient outcomes, conducts ongoing quality improvement initiatives, provides stroke specific education and competency validation for staff, and collaborates throughout the facility with multiple ancillary departments that are involved in stroke care to ensure that patients receive the best evidence-based care in a timely, efficient manner because when it comes to stroke care, TIME LOST IS BRAIN LOST!
