Forrest General Hospital Welcomes New Group of Residents as Graduates Begin New Jobs

Hattiesburg, Miss. — (June 29, 2026) Forrest General Hospital’s tenth group of resident physicians completed their three-year residency with Forrest General Hospital’s Family Medicine Residency Program and have accepted full-time medical positions. As these graduates completed their studies, the program also welcomes its 13th class of residents. The new class of eight residents will begin their residency on July 1, 2026, and will graduate in June 2029.

This is the third year the incoming class has been made up of eight residents. Thanks to national legislation, there has been an opportunity to apply for growth in residency programs.

This new class of doctors will practice at the Forrest General Hospital Family Medicine Residency Clinic, located on the first floor of Hattiesburg Clinic, and will rotate through many clinical departments throughout the three-year program. The Residency Clinic oversees employee health for FGH. These physicians also play an integral role in the Edwards Street Fellowship Health Clinic, where the residents are the primary workforce for this medically underserved community. Additionally, the residents have an inpatient service allowing them to admit patients into the hospital as necessary and continue to provide them care.

• James Franklin, MD – St. George’s University School of Medicine, Grenada
• Yasmin Hosseini, DO – William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Hattiesburg
• Peter Ma, DO – Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Iowa
• Midhat Najmi, MD – American International School of Medicine, Guyana

FMR Program Director, Dr. Rambod Rouhbakhsh spoke to the members of the graduating class, providing words of wisdom and asking some thought-provoking questions.

“The graduating class of 2026 has reached a remarkable achievement,” he said. “They have excelled academically, personally, clinically. They showed up day after day to very challenging workplace environments, by design. They had overnight shifts, family meetings, board exams, and through it all they have comported themselves with grace and compassion. As difficult as this path has been, it’s also been exceptionally clear cut.

“You are no longer medical trainees. You are now architects of your careers going forward. Go forward, not just as heroes, but as thinkers, and remember that in medicine and life, you don’t get better outcomes by doing more, you get better outcomes by thinking better. Congratulations! Go forward and do great things.”

During a special event on June 25 at Dogwood Venue, resident physicians were recognized with awards. Those include:

• Excellence in Ambulatory Medicine – Jonathan Breaux, MD

Residents voted as a group on two Preceptors of the Year. This year’s winners were:

• Family Medicine Residency Program Preceptor of the Year – Gaylen Sanders, MD (Pediatrics)
• Family Medicine Residency Program Preceptor of the Year – Rick Boyte, MD (Palliative Care)

The Rifkin Family Foundation for Medical Education Faculty Educator award was presented to Emily Schalmo, DO
