New Patient Navigation Program empowers patients at Forrest General Hospital’s Cancer Center

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (October 6, 2017) – Forrest General Hospital has launched a new Patient Navigation Program as part of their services at the Forrest General Cancer Center.

The oncology patient navigator, Ellen Holbrook, RN, provides individualized, patient-centered care for cancer patients. Holbrook helps to identify barriers to care and works to eliminate them by providing education and referrals to ancillary or community resources.

“As the oncology patient navigator, I am here to help our patients find solutions to those barriers and make sure they have the best experience through their cancer care. For example, patients may be uninsured or underinsured. Some patients may have cultural or language barriers; there are financial and transportation barriers, as well. Sometimes there are social issues to combat such as a patient who does not have a good support system at home through friends or family,” said Holbrook.

The oncology patient navigator provides many services to patients such as accompanying them to appointments with their physicians. Often patients may become overwhelmed by the volume of health information they receive, making it difficult to remember the information after the appointment. The oncology patient navigator can be available during appointments to offer support and afterwards to explain or answer any questions.

Holbrook said, “The goal of this program is to help guide patients and their loved ones through our complex healthcare system. I hope it will help them to become empowered and able to take control of their care through this whole experience.”

A patient must have a cancer diagnosis and a recommendation for treatment to meet with the oncology patient navigator, but no referral is necessary. Patients cal call the Cancer Center at 288-1700 to make an appointment.
