    Forrest General Hospital recognized by the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency

    HATTIESBURG, MS – (July 18, 2017) The Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA) recognized Forrest General Hospital at the 4th Annual Spero Awards on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at the Hilton Jackson. The hospital was honored as one of the hospital partners working with MORA to save lives and promote organ, eye and tissue donation.

    “Forrest General Hospital’s staff always goes above and beyond to ensure that the families they serve are given the opportunity to make a decision in regards to donation. The awards presented to Forrest General Hospital are a true reflection of the dedication, the professionalism, and the heart of caring that is Forrest General Hospital and its staff. The commitment and partnership between Forrest General Hospital and the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA) continues to grow stronger due to the desire to help the citizens and communities in the Hattiesburg area,” said Joel Stevens, Hospital Development Coordinator/Board Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC)

    Forrest General received Spero Awards for Most Supportive Organ & Tissue Hospital, Most Supportive Surgical Staff, and Most Supportive Critical Care Staff. Edward Pellerano, M.D., was named Physician Champion of the Year for his work in the intensive care unit at Forrest General, and Adrian Murry, a local donor mom, was chosen as Volunteer of the Year. Forrest General was also among 12 hospitals to receive the Hospital Excellence Award signifying achievement of national organ donation performance standards set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. MORA also awarded Forrest General the Platinum Award for participation in the Hospitals for Hope campaign. Hospitals of Hope is an awareness campaign intended to increase registrations for organ, eye, and tissue donation. Forrest General was also honored to have staff nominated in the following categories: Nurse Champion of the Year, Gladys Wolff, RN, and Advance Practice Nurse of the Year, David Johnson, ACNP, and Brad Pickering, ACNP.

    “I am thankful to MORA for all of the life-changing work they do in Mississippi, and I am glad to be a part of the healing made possible by the tireless effort of this organization. On behalf of Forrest General, we are pleased to do our part in promoting organ donation in the state,” said Edward Pellerano, M.D.

    A total of 18 Spero Awards were presented to individuals and organizations from areas throughout the state as well as one Special Recognition Spero Award. The word “Spero” (Spā-rō) is Latin for “hope.” The title was chosen to reflect the hope that organ and tissue donation brings to those in need of a lifesaving organ or a life improving tissue transplant.

    Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency 

    A new patient is added to the national transplant waiting list every 10 minutes and an average of 22 people die each day awaiting a lifesaving transplant that never comes. Currently there are nearly 1,500 Mississippians on the organ transplant waiting list with over 1,300 of those waiting on a kidney transplant.  MORA wants everyone to know one organ donor can save eight lives and one tissue donor can save or improve the lives of 50 recipients or more.
