Spirit of Women’s Spirit Girls donate over 600 items for Louisiana flood relief

Hattiesburg, Miss (August 22, 2016) – The Spirit Girls, a program made up of 145 young ladies sponsored by Forrest General’s Spirit of Women, collected and donated over 600 items to assist with flood relief in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

“The flooding and devastation that has taken place in Louisiana over the past week has really hit home. A tragedy like this could easily happen to us or our loved ones. It’s important to think about the outside aide we have received after being hit by devastating tornadoes and extend the same kindness to others who need help,” said Breanne Gaubert, Spirit Girl and Sweetea coordinator.

The group coupled their efforts with Pure Barre in Hattiesburg, Miss., a Spirit of Women Rewards Partner. The items were taken Friday, August 19, to a drop-off point in Louisiana. The girls were asked to bring hygiene items or cleaning supplies rather than clothes or toys due to the lack of storage space at the shelters where thousands are living temporarily.

“Our intention with this drive was to give support to those who are in emergency shelters and have lost everything. I am impressed by how quickly the girls responded to bring things to donate. I encouraged them to think about how they would feel living in a shelter and to think about the basic items a person would need to get by until another arrangement could be made,” said Gaubert.

Spirit Girls participate in a wide range of activities and community service projects for organizations such as The Association for the Rights of Citizens with Disabilities (The ARC), Dream of Hattiesburg, Hattiesburg Zoo, and The Children’s Center for Communication and Development. Spirit Girls also participate in Spirit of Women events.

The program offers an opportunity for young ladies to learn the importance of taking action for their health and giving back to the community. The hours of community service contributed through various events provides a chance to make lasting contributions to their community as well as lasting friendships. Last year’s Spirit Girls volunteered more than 3,500 hours.
