Forrest General Hospital is Honored with the 2016 Women’s Choice Award® as one of America’s Best Stroke Centers

(Hattiesburg, Miss.) May 2, 2016 – Forrest General Hospital has received the 2016 Women’s Choice Award® as one of America’s Best Stroke Centers. This evidence-based designation is the only Stroke Center award that identifies the country’s best healthcare institutions based on robust criteria that considers female patient satisfaction, clinical excellence, and what women say they want from a hospital.

The Mississippi Healthcare Alliance State Plan places stroke as the fifth leading cause of death in Mississippi accounting for 5.3 percent of all deaths. The Mississippi stroke mortality rate is the fifth highest in the nation. Stroke death rates in the state are falling slightly faster than the national average but remain 23.8 percent higher than the overall US rate.

Stroke Coordinator at Forrest General, Lyndsay Strickland, said, “According to the American Stroke Association, more women than men suffer from strokes making it even more important for women to be aware not only of the signs and risk factors of stroke, but also where to seek treatment for stroke. Receiving an award from a trusted organization like Women’s Choice will help women in our community make the best decision for their comprehensive stroke care.”

The list of over 487 award winners, including Forrest General, represents hospitals that have met the high standards of the Joint Commission and/or Det Norske Veritas Healthcare (DNV GL) Primary Stroke Care Center Certification, and American Heart Association (AHA) and American Stroke Association (ASA).

Hospitals that have earned this award must first hold a Comprehensive or Primary Stroke Center Certification from the Joint Commission or DNV GL recognizing centers that meet high standards for stroke care. To receive Comprehensive or Primary certification, Stroke Centers must meet disease-specific clinical requirements and expectations which include:

    • Use of a standardized method of delivering care,
    • Support for patient self-management activities,
    • Tailoring of treatment and intervention to individual needs,
    • Promotion of the flow of patient information across settings and providers, while protecting patient rights, security and privacy,
    • Analysis and use of standardized performance measure data to continually improve treatment plans, and
    • Demonstration of their application of and compliance with clinical practice guidelines published by the AHA/ASA or equivalent evidence-based guidelines.

The Stroke Care Center at Forrest General was established to ensure that accessible and available quality health care is provided for patients who have suffered a stroke. Forrest General’s physicians and staff understand that although one family member may suffer the consequences of neurological damage, stroke affects the entire family and community. Age is an independent risk factor for stroke; therefore, with the aging population an increase in the number of patients suffering a stroke is anticipated. In an effort to meet the needs of the community, the staff at Forrest General continues to educate and inform the public about the warning signs of a stroke and how to make lifestyle choices that decrease a person’s risk of stroke.
