Forrest General Hospital brings Fall Prediction Technology to South Mississippi

Hattiesburg, Miss. (June 8, 2016) – Forrest General Hospital is proud to host a multi-city Mobile Fall-Risk Assessment and Prevention Laboratory tour in conjunction with the Hattiesburg Senior Fair at Lake Terrace Convention Center. The Electronic Caregiver Company (ECG) is the creator of the nation’s most advanced fall assessment and prevention laboratory.

For people ages 65 and older, falls are the number 1 cause of accidental death, traumatic brain injury and loss of independence. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 3 adults over 65 will fall in the United States each year resulting in 2.5 million emergency room visits and 700,000 hospitalizations. Family members and seniors may not realize that falls can be predicted and prevented. ECG has partnered with New Mexico State University to conduct a nationwide research study of adults 65 and older using gait analysis data to predict the risk of future falls.

“We’re happy to bring this exciting service to the area and help raise awareness among seniors and their families. Educating people in our community about the dangers of falls can help prevent serious injuries in the future and give seniors confidence in taking control of their health,” said Melita Miller, director of Forrest General Home Care and Hospice.

For eight days in June, the technical team of ECG will provide free fall risk screenings to South Mississippi Seniors in six cities: Hattiesburg, Laurel, Prentiss, Columbia, Lumberton and Picayune. Seniors will be assessed by world-class experts using non-invasive, state-of-the-art technology. The pressure walkway contains 11,000 micro sensors to detect gait characteristics.

In approximately 15-20 minutes, a consultative report will be provided to senior participants demonstrating their fall risk score with an explanation of their personal gait deficits and anomalies which can lead to pain, injury and catastrophic falls. The report provides education and guidelines on how to prevent a fall; it can be shared with a physician, physical therapist or other recommended professional. Additionally, each participant will receive a FREE home safety inspection handbook to further improve home safety, prevent falls and promote wellness at home.

The public is invited to observe, but participant appointments are limited. Seniors can request a screening time by contacting Pam Breazeale at 601-467-7707. Below is a list of all 8 stops on the tour:

    • Tuesday, June 14 at First Baptist Church/The Link, 401 Goodyear Blvd., Picayune
