Forrest General Hospital receives generous donation for Milk Bank

HATTIESBURG, Miss (June 9, 2015) – Forrest General Hospital’s Women and Children’s Services lactation program received a generous 13-gallon breast milk donation for The Mother’s Milk Bank. On Friday, June 4, Jamie Martin, previously a labor and delivery patient at Forrest General, made the donation.

The Mother’s Milk Bank, which is located in Austin, TX, is one of 15 milk banks located in North America. Since the availability of human milk is a chronic problem in many labor and delivery units across the country, milk banks provide pasteurized, donated milk to premature and otherwise medically fragile babies whose own mothers do not have any or enough of their own breast milk.

“We were educated about our options during our time at Forrest General, and we were lucky enough to have a healthy pregnancy so we wanted to provide the Milk Bank with this donation,” said Jamie and Scott Martin.

Breast milk can be life-saving. Babies born prematurely have a greater opportunity of living and thriving when they are fed human milk, which helps fights infection while providing ideal nutrition to newborns. Premature deliveries, multiple children, and various illness and infections are all reasons a newborn may require human milk, and The Mother’s Milk Bank makes the availability of human milk possible.

“We now know how important having access to human milk can be. If we were in someone else’s shoes, we would definitely want the best for our children,” said Martin.

“We are grateful for donors like Jamie who help provide the nutrients that benefit our tiniest patients. We are pleased to be part of this program and will continue to educate the community and gather as much milk as we can for the milk bank,” said Tangela Boutwell, Director of Women and Children’s Services.
