Forrest General Presents the 2014 Philip Rogers Award Winners

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – (December 23, 2014) Forrest General Hospital proudly announced the winners of the ninth-annual Philip W. Rogers Award during the hospital’s annual Employee Christmas Celebration! This annual award is presented to healthcare workers who exemplify commitment to the field of medicine and excellence in patient care. This year, the award was presented to three individuals based on nominations received from their peers. Each winner represents one of Rogers’ most admirable characteristics – Humanitarian, Innovator, Leader and Mentor.

Brad H. Massey, ANP, was honored with the Philip Rogers Humanitarian Award. Massey is a nurse practitioner who specializes in the acute and chronic management of congestive heart failure. Massey currently runs his own healthcare company, Pioneer Healthcare, L.L.C., which focuses on the home management of advanced congestive heart failure. The company utilizes education, diet therapy and exercise management to improve the patient’s functional status. Massey was previously employed by Hattiesburg Clinic’s Southern Heart Center from August 2001 to December 2008. Massey has also served as a registered nurse and captain in the United States Army. Massey is a board certified acute care nurse practitioner, American Nurses Credentialing Center; board certified adult primary care nurse practitioner, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; and a University of Southern Mississippi Adjunct Professor. “If he has a patient in dire need of medicine or otherwise, he goes out of his way to help that person. Brad is very dedicated to his profession and his patients,” said Lyda Gilmore with Forrest General’s Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation.

The Innovator Award was presented to George McGee, MD, physician champion and member of Forrest General’s Epic Implementation Team. Dr. McGee has served as a trauma surgeon with Forrest General since August 2004. He has also held a private practice of General Surgery with the Surgery Clinic of Hattiesburg from July 1982 to July 2004. Dr. McGee is certified by the American Board of Surgery and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). He is a member of the American College of Surgeons (Fellow), American Medical Association, American Society of General Surgeons (Founding Member), Hiram C. Polk, Jr. Surgical Society, Mississippi State Medical Association, South Mississippi Medical Society and Southeastern Surgical Congress. According to his colleagues, “Dr. McGee is known to go to the patient care units to educate nursing staff on changes without being asked. He is also a key resource for physicians and is always willing to go the extra mile to get them on board with changes.”

The award for Leadership was given to the late William Darrell Burnham, MD. Dr. Burnham became a member of the Forrest General Medical Staff in 1986. In 1994, Dr. Burnham, along with doctors Joe Campbell, David Sicard and Hardy Henderson, founded Hattiesburg Clinic Anesthesiology. Dr. Burnham served as Forrest General’s department chair for Anesthesia in 1988, 1989, 1994 and 1995. In his time at Hattiesburg Clinic, he served as medical director for Lowery A. Woodall Outpatient Surgery Center and on the board of directors from 2000 to 2003. Dr. Burnham was killed in a motorcycle crash in October 2014. “Dr. Burnham will be remembered for many wonderful traits including his warm smile and the kindness he showed for others. He was an outstanding person and a valued member of our medical team,” said Forrest General and staff members.
